Presentation to Dr. Creaven
Dental Teaching Award
There was a suggestion from some former students of the Dublin Dental School & Hospital, that there should be an award made available to some of our dental teachers. This award should be presented on behalf of the members of the Alumni Association. The presentation of the award should recognize the excellent dental teaching that we, as undergraduate students received while attending the DDSH in past years.

The idea was received but on review it was decided that the award should be made a perpetual award. A set of rules were drawn up and approved. A copy of the rules is enclosed below for your information.

Dr. Joe Creaven was nominated to receive the first award. The award was presented to Dr. Creaven accompanied by his wife Maura and also some members of their family on March 25th 2009 in the West Dinging room of TCD. Over 60 previous dental students and colleagues of Dr Creaven were presence for the presentation.
Book Launch
‘The Evolution of a Profession and of its Dental School in Dublin’
This second edition of ‘The Evolution of a Profession and of its Dental School in Dublin’ published by Linden Publishing Limited was launched by the Dublin Dental Hospital Alumni Association at a reception held in the Dental Hospital on Tuesday 9th December.
There was a great air of celebration as the President of the Alumni Dr. Barry Harrington welcomed the large gathering. Guests were also addressed by Prof. Noel Claffey Dean of the School and Hospital and Dr. Conor McAlister, Editor of the book who presented a presentation copy to former Dean Professor Diarmuid Shanley who had written the final chapters covering the more recent history. Dr. Adrian Lee accepted a special presentation on behalf of the Lee Family.
When speaking about the book Brendan Kennelly told the gathering that the story contained between its covers had drawn him in and he assured his listeners that the history was a most enjoyable read. He congratulated those associated with the production of the book and evoked much laughter as he recalled in colourful detail his first youthful encounter with a dentist in the national school in his native Ballylongford .
The first edition of this book by John B. Lee was published to coincide with the Quatercentenary celebrations of Trinity College in 1992. In the light of more recent significant developments in the Dental School and Hospital John undertook the task of updating the history in collaboration with Dr. Conor McAlister in 2006.
This newly published edition of the history benefits from recently discovered material including a scrapbook belonging to the family of D.L. Rogers (Dean of the Dental School 1924-1952) found in a second hand bookshop and presented to John Lee in 1995.
A specially bound copy of the book was presented to President McAleese by the Alumni Association at a reception in ÃÂras an Uachtaráin attended by members of Dr. Lees family and representatives of the School and the Hospital Board. The President is Patron of the Dublin Dental Hospital Alumni Association
At the launch the Editor expressed gratitude to all those who provided historical material. There was a period when the hospital was under threat of closure due to the dilapidated condition of the building. Funding was eventually secured and the extended and refurbished building designed by Ahrends Burton and Koralek Architects was completed in 1998. The building subsequently won architectural awards both in Ireland and in the United Kingdom.
2008 marks the 110th anniversary of the opening of the hospital in its present location.
Regrettably John Lee passed away shortly before the book went to print. The book will serve as a tribute to the dedicated service of so many to dentistry in Ireland.
