Postgraduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation in Dentistry
The Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH) is inviting applications to the Postgraduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation in Dentistry to commence in January 2013 for an eighteen month course.
The Course is aimed at primary care dental practitioners providing support for those patients with dental anxiety and undertaking dentistry in a safe, effective and anxiety free manner. It also aims to provide a recognised education and training programme that will equip dentists with the knowledge, skills and experience to safely and independently use conscious sedation techniques in their own clinics. The objectives of the course are to provide:
- A comprehensive education in clinical practice of conscious sedation, anxiety and pain control for patients in the theoretical principles.
- Development of an ability to critically analyze and apply the findings of the professional literature.
The Postgraduate Diploma is awarded by the University of Dublin, Trinity College and is a registerable qualification with the Dental Council. The course will involve attendance for 11 didactic days and a minimum of 20 clinical, hands-on sessions in the DDUH or an associated hospital over an 18 month period.
Applicants must have a dental qualification and be registered by the Dental Council of Ireland. As a pre-requisite for acceptance on the Course, students must provide evidence of satisfactory seroconversion for protection against Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. Garda (police) vetting will be required. Applicants will need to include an additional 300-word statement indicating why they wish to undertake the course.
Entry to the Diploma in Conscious Sedation in Dentistry would normally follow on from a two-year period of dental training at least, preferably with exposure/experience of conscious sedation.
Postgraduate students will be assessed throughout the course by:
- Written examinations
- Course work and essays
- Oral Presentations
- Literature review project
- Professional Practice Placement Logbook
