The Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH) Microbiology Research Unit, Trinity College Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Department of Microbiology at Beaumont Hospital are internationally acclaimed for clinical and transnational microbiology research. Both departments have collaborated successfully for many years on the molecular epidemiology, population biology, antibiotic resistance mechanisms and evolution of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). One of our main research themes focuses on investigating routes of transmission of MRSA and methicillin susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) in the hospital environment using high-throughput molecular platforms including DNA micro-array profiling and whole-genome sequencing in order to prevent the spread of infection.
