The Dublin Dental University Hospital is seeking to recruit a CSSD Technician to join our Central Decontamination Unit. This is a full-time and permanent contract. The successful candidate will provide support to the CSSD Team Leaders, will embrace continuous quality improvement and development and will contribute to the management of the changes necessary to achieve Dublin Dental University Hospital. The position reports to and is accountable to the CSSD Manager/Team Leader in all matters relating to the job.
Outline of Duties and Responsibilities
The post holder will assist in a range of Central Decontamination Unit functions including but not limited to:
- Collect and transport used medical devices and equipment from user areas for decontamination and sterilisation and return to the correct department.
- Decontaminate used medical devices using mechanical methods.
- Inspect and function test medical devices. Report any discrepancies immediately to CSSD Manager or Team Leader.
- Assembly and packing of instrument sets and other equipment for sterilisation.
- Loading and unloading autoclaves, sterilising packs and sets of instruments.
- Prepare and examine packs prior to their storage, for tears and dampness.
- Distribute and store all sterilised equipment and instruments in appropriate place.
- Observation and checking of graphs and printouts of Daily/Weekly testing of autoclaves, washers.
- Record relevant data in appropriate logbooks with full clear signature of operative/technician.
- Maintenance of records in line with policy of Department and EU legislation.
- Archive documents according to national and European legislation.
- Stocking shelves with sterile supplies, assisting with stock control and requisitioning.
- Storage and handling of raw material components.
- Ensure that standard precautions are adhered to and comply with infection control and other policies.
- Comply with Health and Safety procedures by using protective clothing – PPE (personal protective equipment).
- Ensure Health & Safety standards are met.
- Report any incident/accident that may occur to the CSSD Manager/Team Leader in accordance with hospital policy.
- Participate in manual and/or computerised traceability of reusable medical devices as part of a quality system.
- Adhere to National Hygiene Standards and complete Hygiene Audits monthly.
- Observe and uphold daily / weekly cleaning standards in the department. Report any inadequacies.
- Maintain a clean and dust-free environment at all times.
- Facilitate effective communication with the multidisciplinary team as necessary.
- Provide a high standard of safe practice for patient care.
- Ensure that all equipment in the CSSD is checked by an appropriate user according to hospital policy.
- Demonstrate initiative and be receptive to new ideas and development.
- Ensure that telephone messages are correctly delivered to the CSSD Manager / Team Leader.
- Act as a mentor for new Technicians, Student Dental Nurses and Dental science.
- All other appropriate duties as may be assigned from time to time by the CSSD Manager / Team Leader or Director of Nursing.
The role of the CSSD Technician includes but is not limited to:
- Ad hoc projects, as required
- To perform such other duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned to him/her by the Head of Division
- Take responsibility for own up-skilling and training
The post holder will attend the following meetings and all other meetings as required:
- CSSD forth-nightly team meetings
- Staff forums
- IDI Member and attend IDI study days

Qualifications, Experience & Person Specification
Each candidate must:
- Hold a qualification in Health Services Skills or Health Care Support at Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI)* Level 5 (or higher).
- Have achieved a good standard of education.
- Have excellent interpersonal skills and proven written and verbal communication abilities.
- Understand the role of the CSSD Technician in the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD).
- Work with the CSSD Manager and Team Leaders to ensure the efficient running of the CSSD.
- Be cognisant of safeguarding the safety and welfare of patients, staff and students.
- Be fully competent in all Microsoft Office packages.
- Must be available to available to work as per the CSSD roster.
Candidates must ideally:
- Have experience in Decontamination and/or C.S.S.D and/or possess a qualification is desirable.
- Have the ability to work on own initiative, prioritise and manage a number of issues simultaneously and demonstrate attention to detail.
- Have the ability to undertake the physical demands of the role.
- Be motivated and able to identify potential difficulties and formulate solutions.
- Possess a clear understanding and commitment to the ethos and philosophy of Dublin Dental University Hospital.
- Be of good character.
