Locum Academic Senior Lecturer/Consultant in Oral Surgery (Part-Time & SPC 12 Months, 18.5 hours per week/0.5 FTE)
The Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH) is seeking to recruit Academic Senior Lecturer / Consultant in Oral Surgery, part-time and 18.5 hours per week/0.5 FTE. This is a backfill for a Senior Academic Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) staff in the Division of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine & Oral Pathology, while the OMFS post is being reconfigured as a joint post between St James and the DDUH (TCD).
The successful applicant will contribute to education in the undergraduate curricula in the School of Dental Science and the Dublin Dental University Hospital. A three-year taught doctoral programme in Oral Surgery is well established and the successful applicant’s main duties will be to support and contribute to the organisation and delivery of this programme, including research.
Reporting to the Clinical Director / Line Manager the Academic Senior Lecturer / Consultant (Trinity title: Associate Professor) in Oral Surgery will perform the duties of the post as outlined in this Job Description and outlined within the National POCC Terms and Conditions.
Qualifications, Experience & Person Specification
The clinical responsibilities will be confined to the scope of practise of an Academic Oral Surgeon and will include the management of patients requiring secondary and tertiary care in the area of Oral Surgery (OS) and other patient cohorts as directed. Applicants must have substantial teaching experience at university level including the clinical supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students in oral surgery.
Registration with the Dental Council and necessary qualifications for a Consultant in Oral Surgery
(a) Be registered in the Register of Dentists for Ireland or be entitled to be so registered; See Note 1*
And
(b) Hold or be eligible for Full Registration with the Dental Council (Oral Surgery List), ; See Note 1*
And
c) Three years certified postgraduate specialist training in Oral Surgery or equivalent
And
(d) Possession of the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship or a minimum of twenty-four months in a full-time training post or equivalent part-time under the supervision of a named Consultant in the specialty, post qualification as a specialist. (Part-time training pro-rata to be attained within five years); See Note 2**
Or
An additional three years Consultant supervised post-graduate clinical practice experience in Oral Surgery; See Note 3***
Note1: * Post Holders must maintain annual registration in the general dental register and, where required, the relevant specialist register with the Dental Council of Ireland.
Note 2: ** Equivalence to the standard of the intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination.
a) A minimum of twenty-four months in a full–time training post or equivalent part–time under the supervision of a named Consultant in the specialty, post qualification as a specialist. Part – time training pro – rata to be attained within five years.
b) A written confirmation of satisfactory progress from the named Consultant Trainer including satisfactory completion of the appropriate number of competencies, if prescribed.
c) Supervised clinical experience on complex cases appropriate to the discipline, in a secondary or tertiary care setting, cross disciplinary care management, training, leadership, and confirmation of learning by exam / attestation / confirmation of acquired learning.
Note 3: *** Equivalent qualification:
Equivalence to the standard of the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination.
a) A minimum of twenty-four months in a full-time training post or equivalent part-time post under the supervision of a named Consultant in Oral Surgery/ Oral & Maxillo-facial surgeon, post qualification as a specialist. Part time training pro-rata to be attained within five years.
b) A written confirmation of satisfactory progress from the named Consultant Trainer, including satisfactory completion of the appropriate number of competencies, if prescribed.
Supervised clinical experience in complex cases appropriate to maxillofacial prosthodontics, in a secondary or tertiary care setting, cross disciplinary care management, training and leadership and confirmation of learning by examination/attestation/confirmation of acquired learning.
Note: The successful candidate will be allowed a maximum of 60 calendar days from date of interview to secure this registration and produce evidence of special interest training where relevant. Should the successful candidate not be registered at that time, the post may be offered to the next suitable candidate (or, in the case of HSE posts, the Public Appointments Service may choose not to recommend that candidate to the employer). Should no suitable candidate exist, a further recruitment process may be initiated.
Academic Qualification
An integral part of this academic position is to provide undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Oral Surgery, and to undertake and supervise research in the School of Dental Science, Trinity College. The appointee will be based at the Dublin Dental University Hospital as the primary location.
The candidate should preferably have attained a PhD and to have an active interest in dental research with a proven track record in research (senior authorship on peer-reviewed publications) and success in securing funding for research projects.
The candidate should have extensive experience and have held leadership roles in the clinical and didactic teaching of undergraduate Dental Science, Dental Hygiene and Dental Nursing students in a university setting. The candidate should also be familiar with undergraduate curriculum design, delivery and assessment, and must demonstrate a strong track record of leading teaching modules at undergraduate level.
The candidate should have extensive experience in the clinical and didactic teaching of postgraduate students in Oral Surgery, preferably in a multidisciplinary setting. The candidate should also be familiar with postgraduate curriculum design, delivery and assessment.

Accountability
The appointee will be responsible to the Clinical Director / Line Manager. The position reports and is accountable to the Clinical Director, as outlined under Section 9 of the POCC terms and conditions.
Outline of Duties and Responsibilities
The Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH) is a tertiary referral centre for Oral Surgery and for Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgery. It provides comprehensive oral / and dental diagnostic, surgical support service for patients requiring oral surgery.
The key duties of the role are to backfill the clinical teaching and educational roles in Oral Surgery of an Academic Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, at the Dublin Dental University Hospital. The substantive OMFS post is being reconfigured as a joint post between St James and the DDUH (TCD). In the interim the locum post holder will provide clinical and academic leadership in Oral Surgery. The successful candidate will be expected to further develop and manage the education/training and research area of Oral Surgery and provide a consultant service for the care of people who come within the remit of the speciality. A major role is joint working with key stakeholders in the HSE, in particular service providers and other agencies to scope and deliver appropriate education/training and research in the area of Oral Surgery.
The post holder will interact with a range of surgical, medical and dental specialists at the DDUH, Trinity College Dublin, School of Medicine and the Trinity St James’s Cancer Institute in developing and delivering internationally recognised educational programmes, translational research and clinical leadership that address the needs of patients. As such, they will take cognisance of national and European regulations, guidelines and local service needs. Importantly, the post holder functions as a TCD academic, affording them the opportunity to utilise all the resources of a World Top 100 University in forging collaborations, driving innovation and leading impactful research. There has been significant research in oral medicine, oral pathology, including cancer at the Dublin Dental University Hospital
Academic
a) Actively participate in the formulation of strategic plans for the University and Hospital and take responsibility for the delivery of strategic goals.
b) Take responsibility for the administration, organisation and delivery of oral care teaching and training to undergraduates, postgraduates, those in higher training and continuing education courses.
c) Be responsible for the design, completion and analysis of curricular material (including on-line) and assessments.
d) Direct training for dental care team in the care of patients requiring oral surgery.
e) Undertake and supervise independent research. Advise and assist students and junior colleagues with the design and publication of their research. Attract external support for research. Develop an international research profile.
f) Organise and take responsibility for the promotion of the activities and interests of the Dublin Dental University Hospital. Engage with external bodies and stakeholders.
The following are expected at the level of Academic Senior Lecturer / Consultant HSE* grade
(Trinity Title: Associate Professor);
Postgraduate education (apart from clinical) relevant to teaching or research. The candidate should preferably have attained a PhD or equivalent in a relevant area.
Have regard to the strategic needs of the Dublin Dental University Hospital and Trinity College as outlined in the Hospital and University Strategic Plan. Assist in the development and delivery of strategic goals.
Relevant experience and leadership in the design, delivery and management of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Relevant experience within the area of Oral Surgery delivering clinical and educational services.
A proven track record and evidence of a sustained interest in research (senior authorship on peer-reviewed publications) and be able to demonstrate independent research accomplishments in publications and awards.
Evidence of assisting colleagues and students with design and completion of research projects along with a track record of supervision students and junior colleagues with the design, completion and publication of research projects.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially within working teams.

Clinical
a) Lead oral care services and contribute to and support the development of oral surgery patient pathways in the DDUH.
b) Participate in the planning, development and provision of effective oral care services. Incorporate emerging evidence and guidelines for patient care.
c) Engage staff and patients to ascertain what needs to change and prioritise areas that will make the most difference to patients.
d) Provide a patient-centred service for patients referred for oral surgery delivered in line with waiting times.
e) Support the continued development of the oral surgery service for patients.
f) Keep and provide records of the service provided to patients and highlight unmet or emerging needs.
g) Maintain patient records and to supply such reports and other information as may be required by the Hospitals with regard to activity.
h) Engage in clinical audit and risk management in the Hospitals.
i) Be involved in the development and updating of hospital clinical policies.
j) Participate on the on-call rota.
k) Coordinate the dental care of patients where by liaison with primary care practitioners and enhance the care pathway between primary, secondary and tertiary care.
